New Paper machine in Pöls: the world’s largest Yankee Cylinder (drying cylinder) delivered.

Europe’s largest kraft paper machine is currently being built in Pöls, Austria. This represents an investment totaling over 115 mio Euros. On Monday the 11th March the huge „Yankee Cylinder“, the heart of the new paper machine, arrived by special transport in Pöls. The cylinder has a diameter of 6.7 meters and is the largest welded, high precision drying cylinder in the world.

The transportation to Pöls presented a challenge to both the Zellstoff Pöls as well as for Andritz AG, who delivered the machine. The cylinder with its 6.7 meters diameter, with a fully assembled weight of 150 tons was delivered in 2 parts and especially the passage through the Gleinalm tunnel was very risky. The tunnel was blocked off for all traffic in order to allow the passage of this very heavy transport.

The very heart of the new paper machine
The cylinder is a high-precision drying cylinder and is thus responsible for the drying of the paper. It is also called “Yankee Cylinder” and is the heart of every MG paper machine. MG is "machine glazed" paper, a paper with very high strength. "Due to the diameter of the cylinder, the paper passing through has a longer dwelling time on the cylinder surface and due to this fact; the MG paper smoothness is produced on the paper side facing the cylinder." said Siegfried Gruber, who is the responsible Project Manager from the Zellstoff Pöls..

Excellent cooperation of two Styrian companies
„The construction of the new paper machine is a great example of excellent collaboration between two Styrian companies at very high levels,“ said Kurt Maier, CEO of Zellstoff Pöls. Even during the prefabrication of the parts at Andritz AG, work had to be completed with utmost precision to allow a problem free reassembly of the cylinder at the local site in Pöls later on. After arriving in Pöls the 2 parts will be re-built and welded together and in early June, a 600 ton crane will collect and lift the cylinder over the roof of the paper mill to its final inside destination. Here the cylinder will be surface coated and finally grinded for a perfect fit.

Multiple uses of "Starkraft paper”
By the end of 2013 the first Starkraft paper will be produced - especially high-quality bleached kraft paper. This paper will subsequently be used to manufacture bags (e.g for bakery products), carrier bags, wrapping paper, food packaging (eg flour bags or composite packaging) or medical products.
